2D Combustion Modeling of Cell Venting Gas in a Lithium-Ion Battery Pack

With the rapid development of lithium-ion battery technology, powertrain electrification has been widely applied in vehicles. However, if thermal runaway occurs a pack, venting gas cells will spread and burn rapidly, which poses great threat to safety. In this study, 2D CFD simulation combustion characteristics cell pack is performed, possibility detonation explored. First, numerical model for premixed established using two-step mechanism. The are then simulated channel stoichiometric combustible mixture, variations flame velocity pressure increment flow analyzed. Next, effects initial conditions inside including pressure, temperature, excess air coefficient, on propagation process variation evaluated. results indicate that increases with increase or temperature influence more acute. maximum speed achieved slightly rich about 450 mm·s−1. When coefficient around 0.9, changes from slow deflagration fast deflagration, causes high risk explosion pack.
